The government has authorized the establishment of the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders within the PSP, along with a new framework for the deportation and removal of individuals residing illegally in the country.
"The Minister of the Presidency stated that one of the major missteps of the previous government in handling migration was the dissolution of SEF [Foreigners and Borders Service]. This led to gaps in the processes for deporting and removing undocumented citizens, as well as insufficient oversight and entry control. He emphasized that the government had promised, and has now implemented, the creation of the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders within the PSP."
António Leitão Amaro highlighted that this new unit will enable the Public Security Police (PSP) to take charge of "monitoring air borders," overseeing immigration in coordination with the GNR, and managing the deportation and return of undocumented individuals—a process which, according to the minister, "had essentially come to a standstill."
The minister also announced the approval of a new framework for deporting and removing individuals residing illegally in the country.
These two initiatives are part of a draft law on border control that has been approved by the government and will soon be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic for review.
The creation of the new PSP unit was initially announced in June when the Action Plan for Migration was introduced by the government.
Following the dissolution of the Foreigners and Borders Service on October 29 of last year, a specialized air and port security unit was established within the PSP, tasked with overseeing the entry and exit of individuals via air travel and ensuring airport security.
