Évora City Council has approved a proposed €1.50 tourist tax, which could take effect in May or June pending municipal assembly approval.

The Évora City Council has given the green light to a new tourist tax, with the proposal now awaiting discussion and approval by the municipal assembly. If approved and published in the Official Gazette, the tax could take effect as early as May or June.
The initiative, backed by a majority in the council, underwent minor adjustments following public consultations and input from the Municipal Economy and Tourism Commission. One key revision includes allocating part of the revenue to Emergency and Civil Protection services.
Pinto de Sá indicated that the tourist tax could be debated and voted on in a yet-to-be-scheduled extraordinary municipal assembly meeting, potentially taking place by the end of the month.
As outlined in the regulatory proposal, the tax would take effect at the start of the second month after its publication in the Official Gazette, making May or June a likely implementation period.
The plan proposes a fee of €1.50 per guest per night in tourist accommodations, capped at three consecutive nights. Exemptions would apply to minors, people with disabilities, students, and athletes.
The mayor estimates that this tax could generate between €500,000 and €600,000 annually for Évora City Council.
