The President of the Republic has approved the new regulation governing the entry, residency, departure, and deportation of immigrants in Portugal. This regulation includes a provision aimed at simplifying the process for family reunification requests.
The government document makes changes to the rules about immigrants in Portugal. They're updating the law to match changes in the agency that deals with foreigners and borders. The goal is to make administrative procedures simpler and faster for foreign citizens staying in Portugal while also ensuring safety, according to the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA). AIMA highlights that these changes include launching a digital services portal for residence permit applications, especially for family reunification, which will be introduced shortly after the new rules come into effect.
The institution, which combines functions from the dissolved SEF and the High Commission for Migrations (ACM), plans to provide updates on this matter in the days following the implementation of the new regulations.
Established on October 29, 2023, AIMA inherited 347,000 cases, and its primary focus is on regularizing family reunification cases by the end of the year, a goal that has not yet been achieved.

"The issue of family reunification is of utmost importance," emphasized the minister.
In the first quarter of 2024, plans were made to collaborate with municipalities and local immigrant support offices to address pending cases, allocating additional resources to resolve existing issues.
