Santos Populares: Lisbon's Biggest Festive Tradition


The highlight of June in Lisbon is the Santos Populares (Popular Saints) festivities, a month-long celebration honoring the city’s patron saint, Santo António. From the Castelo to the Avenida, and from Praça do Comércio to Alfama, the city is transformed into a lively stage for music, parades, traditional food, and colorful decorations.


Marchas Populares June 12

The most anticipated event of the month is the Marchas Populares, where 24 neighborhoods compete in a colorful, choreographed parade along Avenida da Liberdade.


  • Exhibition at MEO Arena: May 30 – June 1A behind-the-scenes look at the neighborhood groups participating in the march.

  • Main Parade: June 12 at 9 PM free event full of music, dance, and celebration, the night before Santo António Day.


Santo António Weddings – June 12


Sixteen couples from Lisbon’s neighborhoods will get married at Sé de Lisboa in a beautiful collective ceremony, a heartwarming tradition that embodies Lisbon’s love and unity.


Arraiais Populares – All Month


Neighborhood street parties, known as Arraiais, fill the city with music, food, and dancing. Key districts hosting Arraiais include:


  • Alcântara

  • Carnide

  • Estrela

  • Marvila

  • Misericórdia

  • Olivais

  • Penha de França

  • Santa Maria Maior

  • São Vicente


Expect grilled sardines, beer, live music, and plenty of space to dance the night away.

🏳️‍🌈 Lisbon Euro Pride March – June 21


Lisbon’s annual LGBTQIA+ Pride March returns to the streets in solidarity and celebration. Thousands are expected to join the peaceful demonstration and party, marching for equality and love.


🎊 Arraial Lisboa Pride – June 29


The ultimate closing party! Arraial Lisboa Pride is the biggest open-air LGBTQIA+ event in Portugal. It's free, inclusive, and packed with:


  • DJ sets and drag shows

  • Food and drink stalls

  • Activist stands and community outreach

  • Special performances by local and international artists

  • 📍 Location: Terreiro do Paço (Praça do Comércio)

  • 🎟️ Free Entry – Everyone is welcome!

📚 Lisbon Book Fair – June 4 to 22


Held at Parque Eduardo VII, the Lisbon Book Fair features hundreds of stalls from publishers and bookstores. In addition to buying books, you can:


  • Attend readings and poetry sessions

  • Celebrate Fernando Pessoa’s legacy

  • Participate in cultural workshops

  • ✍️ Special Event: “Os Escribas de Lisboa” – June 14 (2 PM – 5 PM)A unique experience where you can write like ancient Roman scribes.
