Judges Resolve 1,359 Immigration Cases Over the Holidays in Portugal

In Portugal, the 136 judges who volunteered to handle immigrant residence permit cases during the judicial holidays issued 1,359 rulings, leaving nearly 20,000 pending cases, according to the Superior Council of Administrative and Tax Courts (CSTAF).

In Portugal

According to data provided by the Superior Council of Administrative and Tax Courts (CSTAF), between July 16 and August 31—during the extended summer shift—each of the 136 magistrates (including probationary judges) issued rulings on an average of 10 cases related to the defense of rights, freedoms, and guarantees in the Administrative Court of the Lisbon District (TACL).

These cases were filed by immigrants in recent months, urging the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) to expedite the legalization of their status in Portugal. This demand comes in response to AIMA's inability to address nearly 400,000 pending cases, which include expressions of interest (submitted before their suspension in June) and residence permit applications.
