Taxpayers who have to pay a second instalment of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) this month can do so until September 1st, 2025, since the legal deadline falls on a Sunday.

This year, property owners in Portugal received some relief as unexpected IT failures disrupted the normal schedule for paying Municipal Property Tax (IMI). The technical issues, which began in April 2025, caused delays in issuing tax payment notices.
In response, the government extended the deadline to give taxpayers more time to meet their obligations without penalties.
Why the Delay?
A major system failure at the Tax Authority (AT) affected the delivery of IMI collection notices, making it difficult for many to receive their payment references on time. To address this, the government pushed the original payment deadline from June 2 to June 30, 2025.
What You Need to Know
Payment Reference Still Available: If you haven’t received a notice by mail, you can still access your payment information through the Tax Authority's online portal.
Instalment Options:
Up to €100: Pay in one instalment by June 30.
€100–€500: Pay in two instalments — one by June 30 and another in November.
Over €500: Pay in three instalments — June 30, September 1, and December 2.
How to Pay: You can pay your IMI via Multibanco (ATMs), online banking, the AT app, MB WAY, post offices, or directly on the Tax Authority’s website.
Early Payment: You’re also free to pay the full amount early if you prefer.
Why This Matters
This extension is especially helpful for those who are abroad or didn’t receive their notice in time. It ensures that no one is unfairly penalised due to technical problems and gives everyone a fair chance to pay on time.
Final Tip
Log in to your Finanças portal to check your payment details and settle your IMI before the new deadline. Avoid last-minute stress and any risk of fines by taking action early.
