Applying for NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) Status
Applications for Portugal’s Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime must typically be submitted before 15 January of the year following the one in which you became a tax resident (Portugal’s tax year follows the calendar year).
This regime offers significant tax advantages to new residents, but the application process requires careful attention to detail. We strongly encourage you to contact INLIS Consulting Portugal as early as possible to assess your eligibility and ensure a timely application.

Other Important Personal Tax Deadlines in Portugal:
IRS (Personal Income Tax) Declaration
The IRS declaration (Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares) must be submitted by 30 June of the year following the tax year. This declaration covers all income earned during the previous calendar year.
Be sure to prepare in advance by collecting:
Income statements (Portuguese and foreign sources)
Invoices and receipts for deductible expenses
Relevant bank documentation
Validating Invoices on e-Fatura
To benefit from tax deductions on healthcare, education, rent, gym memberships, and more, you must validate all relevant invoices on the e-Fatura portal by 25 February of the following year. This is essential to reduce your taxable income.
IMI (Municipal Property Tax)
If you own property in Portugal, your IMI payment deadlines depend on the total amount due:
€100 or less: Full payment due by 31 May
€100 to €500: Pay in two instalments — by 31 May and 30 November
€500 or more: Pay in three instalments — by 31 May, 31 August, and 30 November
Make sure to check your IMI amount and schedule payments accordingly to avoid interest or penalties.
Social Security Contributions (for Self-Employed Individuals)
If you're self-employed, you may be subject to monthly social security contributions after your first year of exemption. You must also submit a quarterly income declaration to Social Security.
