AIMA launches digital portal to renew residence permits in Portugal

AIMA, the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum in Portugal, has just launched a new online Renewals Portal to streamline the process of renewing residence permits. This marks a major step forward for applicants looking to simplify their renewal experience.

Why the AIMA Renewals Portal matters for you

  • Fast, online renewals: Starting with expired permits from July 2025, users can register online, submit documents, pay fees, and track status—all in one place.

  • Phase-by-phase access: On launch, the portal only supports July 2025 expirations. Access will expand to August 2025 titles — and more — in the coming weeks.

  • Email notifications: Anyone with a residence permit that expired by June 30, 2025, has been notified by AIMA via email to use the portal.

Step‑by‑Step: How the AIMA Renewals Portal works

  1. Register on portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt and wait for a password sent via email.

  2. Log in and submit your renewal request with all required documentation.

  3. The system generates a payment guide. You must pay within 24 hours.

  4. Once payment is confirmed, you receive a receipt and your renewal enters AIMA’s review process.

  5. If needed, AIMA will schedule biometric data collection at a regional office.

Who can use this portal?

Initially, only those with residence permits expired in July 2025.
  • Notifications already sent: to holders whose permits expired by June 30, 2025.

  • Future expansion: more expiration months and renewal types will be added soon.

Documents & Eligibility: What you need to apply

Before using the portal, ensure:

  • All required documents are ready and fully complete.

  • Your tax and social security status is up to date.

  • If biometric data or the passport has expired, be prepared for in-person collection.

New policy since April 28, 2025: AIMA no longer accepts incomplete applications. Submissions lacking required documents will be refused outright.

Timeline & Next Steps: What to expect

AIMA’s agenda currently:

  • August‑September 2025: Expand portal access to new expiration months.

  • Ongoing: Notify holders of expired permits and update portal capabilities for different renewal types.

  • Future steps include adding investor and CPLP (Portuguese-speaking countries) permit renewals.

Final tip: Get ready and act early

  • Check your email regularly for AIMA notifications.

  • Make sure your documents, fiscal, and social security info are up to date.

  • Once your portal access opens, don’t delay payment—it's only valid for 24 hours after issuing the payment receipt.

By launching the AIMA Renewals Portal, Portugal is delivering a modern digital solution aimed at reducing delays and bureaucracy in the residence permit renewal process. Stay informed and get ready to renew with ease—even before biometric appointments if all goes smoothly.
